Hierarchies of Quark Masses and the Mixing Matrix in the Standard Theory

چکیده

We study the general dependence of mixing angles on heavy fermion masses when mass hierarchies exist among the fermions. For two generations and small Cabibbo angle, this angle is directly shown to scale like μ1/ms ± μ2/mc, where |μ1| ≪ ms, |μ2| ≪ mc are independent mass scales. For n = 3 generations, we extend to the Yukawa matrices of uand d-type quarks the property that the 2× 2 upper-left sub-matrix of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix K is a good approximation to the Cabibbo matrix C . Then, without any additional Ansatz concerning the existence of mass hierarchies or the smallness of the mixing angles, the moduli of its entries K13,K23,K31,K32 are shown to scale like [β13, β23, β31, β32] √ mc/mt ± [δ13, δ23, δ31, δ32] √ ms/mb, where the β’s and the δ’s are coefficients smaller than 10. This method, when used for two generations, gives a dependence on ms and mc “weaker” than the one obtained first, but which matches a well known behaviour for the Cabibbo angle: θc ≈ √

Consequences of an Abelian Family Symmetry

The addition of an Abelian family symmetry to the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model reproduces the observed hierarchies of quark and lepton masses and quark mixing angles, only if it is anomalous. Green-Schwarz compensation of its anomalies requires the electroweak mixing angle to be sin2 θw = 3/8 at the string scale, without any assumed GUT structure, suggesting a superstring origin for th...

Minimal Mixing of Quarks and Leptons in the SU ( 3 ) Theory of Flavour

We argue that flavour mixing, both in the quark and lepton sector, follows the minimal mixing pattern, according to which the whole of this mixing is basically determined by the physical mass generation for the first family of fermions. So, in the chiral symmetry limit when the masses of the lightest (u and d) quarks vanish, all the quark mixing angles vanish. This minimal pattern is shown to f...

The double mass hierarchy pattern: simultaneously understanding quark and lepton mixing

The charged fermion masses of the three generations exhibit the two strong hierarchiesm3 ≫ m2 ≫ m1. We assume that also neutrino masses satisfy mν3 > mν2 > mν1 and derive the consequences of the hierarchical spectra on the fermionic mixing patterns. The quark and lepton mixing matrices are built in a general framework with their matrix elements expressed in terms of the four fermion mass ratios...

Flavor Symmetries and the Description of Flavor Mixing

It is shown that the hierarchical structure of the quark mass terms in the standard model suggests a new description of the flavor mixing. The latter is primarily a heavy quark mixing involving the t and b quarks, followed by a mixing exclusively in the uchannel or the d-channel. The complex phase describing CP violation arises only in the light quark sector. The Cabibbo angle is not a basic pa...

Comment on "Commutator of the quark mass matrices in the standard electroweak model and a measure of maximal CP nonconservation"

One of the outstanding problems in physics is that of "explaining" the quark masses and mixings. The standard electroweak model, in spite of its dazzling empirical successes, provides only a partial solution to this problem by predicting that the quark mixing matrix is unitary. However, the values of the mixing parameters or the quark masses cannot be predicted. For example, if there are three ...
